2010 pre-season Coaches poll released

It is here, and the first-place votes page has been updated for the 2010 season.  Oklahoma made the biggest upward move from 2009, as it now ranked #8, but did not place in the final 2009 poll.  Conversely, Cincinnati was #9 at the end of last season and fell out of the top 25 pre-season (but just to #26).

largest average margins of victories and losses in BCS OOC games

Not surprisingly, all of the top 10 teams in MoV in BCS OOC games are AQ teams, while none of those with the largest average margin of losses are.    However, Louisville was formerly not an automatic qualifier, and Temple was – in fact, Temple is the only team to have moved from AQ to non-AQ status in the BCS era.

average # of losses for top-15 BCS-ranked teams

In the future, the data that forms the basis of the table below may be used in a web page on BCS Central.   In order to calculate an average number of losses for each year of the BCS era, the losses of only the top-15 were used, because only 15 or 16 teams were placed in the final BCS rankings from 1998 through 2002.

season losses
1998 1.53
1999 1.87
2000 1.60

2004 1.27

conferences’ aggregate BCS rankings points

The title of this post describes the new column on this page‘s table.   Not surprisingly, the two highest totals belong to the only AQ conferences (SEC and Big 12) which have always had 12 members.  The ACC consists of 12 teams now, but had just 9 at the beginning of the BCS era.   Another non-shocker is that the Big East, with only 8 members, comes in last among the 6 BCS conferences.

Top 10 teams of the BCS era in head-to-head matchups

The table on this new page shows that, other than intra-conference rivalries, the highest rated teams have rarely faced each other in the BCS era.  Miami and LSU have both played 7 such teams.   Texas has a winning record against each of the 4 top-10 teams it has played.

Top 25 teams of the BCS era against all FBS conferences

In the BCS era, the Big West Conference existed for only the first 3 seasons.   Boise State, IdahoNew Mexico State, North Texas, and Utah State were members in each of these seasons.  Arkansas State joined at the beginning of the 1999 season, while Nevada left the conference at the end of that season.

As can be seen on this page‘s updated table,  Auburn is the only team in the top-25 of the aggregate BCS rankings to have played against teams from every FBS conference.  However, Alabama, Ohio State and Tennessee have faced opponents from all of the 11 currently existing conferences.

USC is the only top-25 team with a winning record against all the conferences of the teams it has faced from 1998 through 2009.
